Ursa live in Brooklyn Wednesday, Nieman Storyboard update

Ursa Live

Dear friends,

This will be a brief update, but I wanted to share two quick items…

First: If you are going to be around NYC this Wednesday, July 9, join me and my Ursa podcast colleagues for a night of storytelling at The Center for Fiction in Brooklyn

Deesha Philyaw, Dawnie Walton, and Kiese Laymon will be joined onstage by two amazing authors with debut collections: Lawrence Burney (No Sense in Wishing) and Carrie R. Moore (Make Your Way Home).

Come say hi!

Nieman Storyboard podcast update

I’m now six months into my role as editor of Nieman Storyboard — and eight episodes into hosting and producing the Nieman Storyboard podcast. My latest episode is a conversation with Nadia Reiman, reporter and editor for “This American Life” covering immigration. We listened to audio clips from her stories to break down exactly how she and the “TAL” team report, write, and produce these shows.

I’ve learned so much from our guests so far — about the role of journalism in this moment, about taking great care with our subjects, about being open and curious in the world, and about embracing the process. I’ll save those lessons for a future post.

Thanks as always for reading and listening,

Mark
